Cracking the Code on Savage Model Names
We pride ourselves on providing hunters and shooters with a plethora of options when it comes to our firearm selection. Everything from caliber, stock color and shape, action, barrel contour, left-handed – you name it, we probably make it! With so many options come many naming conventions. Many years ago, we started using a short-hand system with letters to indicate the product features each firearm had. That’s how we get names like Savage 93R17 BTVSS or Mark II FVXP. These letters and numbers are sometimes hard to decipher, especially at the gun counter. We hope this guide can help you crack the code on the Savage model names and make sense of the alphabet soup.
While this naming system was implemented many years ago, we still have dozens of current models that still use the lettered naming conventions. However, most new models released after 2018 no longer this system and have names like 110 Storm or Impulse Driven Hunter.
It’s also important to note that this naming convention only applies to the model, not the product family. Let’s take the B22 FV-SR for example. B22 is the product family, so the B does not refer to a “wood laminate stock.” FV-SR is the feature set of the model. F indicates a synthetic stock, V indicates a heavy or "Varmint" contour barrel, and SR indicates the barrel is suppressor-ready (or threaded). Make sense?
