How to Lock the Bolt Open on a Model 64

The Model 64 is a workhorse 22 LR rimfire rifle that has been popular with plinkers and target shooters for years. The Savage 64 is available in a wide variety of configurations for different shooters, all with the same action and reliable functionality. This step-by-step guide will show you how to lock the bolt open on a Model 64. 

WARNING! Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Make sure your firearm is completely unloaded before attempting any field stripping or disassembly. Always wear safety glasses when field stripping or during disassembly/reassembly of your firearm.

How to Lock the Bolt Open

  1. Set the safety to the full safe position.
  2. Push the latch and eject the magazine.
  3. Grasping firmly, slowly pull the cocking handle fully to the rear. Ensure the firearm is clear of ammunition.
  4. Let the cocking handle come forward slowly and push the handle into the counter bore, locking the bolt open.

  5. Re-insert the magazine.

To Close the Bolt

  1. Pull the cocking handle fully to the rear and release it, allowing the handle to “snap” forward.
    1. Tip: Pull outward on the cocking handle to clear the counterbore
