If you’re looking for more information on the RXR22, you’ve come to the right place. Let’s dive into the full feature rundown of everything you need to know about the new Savage RXR22, including how it's built, its full lineup of features, and how you can customize your RXR22 to fit your needs!
What is the RXR22?
The Savage RXR22 is our newest semi-auto 22 LR rifle. It operates on a straight blowback system for simple, reliable operation. The RXR22 is designed to be easy to use for both target shooting and hunting, with lots of ability to customize the rifle to fit your needs. It’s also affordable, with an MSRP of $299. This makes the RXR22 a great choice for a first-time gun owner, a parent who wants to teach their child about proper shooting fundamentals, or anyone who’s looking for a fun small game or target shooting rifle!
Behind the Build
Construction
The Savage RXR22 is rugged and durable, constructed with a polymer receiver that holds up well to inclement weather conditions in the field and day after day of target practice on the range. The receiver is manufactured with an integral 0 MOA picatinny rail, making it simple to mount your favorite red dot sight or scope onto the rifle without needing to purchase additional mounting bases.
The RXR22 comes with a standard carbon steel barrel that is threaded 1/2x28 for attaching your favorite muzzle device. The standard barrel comes with a spacer installed between the barrel and the forend. We’ll reveal the purpose of that spacer a little bit later in this guide.
The stock on the RXR22 has an ergonomic design with a more vertical style pistol grip compared to a traditional rifle stock. The stock also has a rear cut-out for stabilization if you are shooting off bags or a rest, and the forend comes with a Picatinny rail molded into the stock for easily installing accessories like lights, lasers, and more! The RXR22 also comes standard with front and rear sling swivel studs, allowing you to use a sling for easy carry in the field or attach a bipod for use at the range.
Additional Features
So, what else is new with the Savage RXR22? There are a few key features you should take note of.
Using factory Savage magazines, the RXR22 features a last-round bolt hold open that lets you know when you’re out of ammo in your current magazine. Like most other semi-auto rifles, the bolt can be released when a loaded magazine is inserted, when the bolt is pulled rearward and released, or when the bolt release is pressed.
The trigger group and barrel on the RXR22 are removable. This allows them to not only be easily serviced, but also leads to lots of customization possibilities.
The RXR22 receiver comes with a cleaning port built into the rear, allowing you to clean the rifle without having to remove the barrel.
Customization Your Way
With the Savage RXR22, customization is the name of the game. This starts with the grip modules, which are easy to swap out, offering improved ergonomics and fitment for a wide variety of shooters’ hands. The RXR22 comes with a small, medium, and large grip module from the factory.
The integral Picatinny rails on the RXR22 allow for a wide variety of optics and accessories to be easily mounted. You can quickly set up the RXR22 with a red dot for close-range plinking, or with a scope for longer-range target shooting and small game hunting.
The carbon steel barrel is threaded 1/2x28, making it perfect for using a suppressor for whisper-quiet shooting and hunting. This helps make the RXR22 a go-to choice for shooters who want to keep the noise down to help keep shooting safer for both themselves and those around them. With the RXR22, we’ve set out to offer small game hunters and shooters the best 22 rifle for customization.
Aftermarket Accessory Support
One of the most exciting aspects of the new Savage RXR22 is the wide range of aftermarket accessory support that is available. The RXR22 is designed to be compatible with Ruger® 10/22® magazines, barrels, and triggers, so you can use commonly available accessories that are widely available on the market to further customize your RXR22.
Remember the barrel shim we referenced earlier? The RXR22 will accept barrels up to .920” diameter, commonly referred to as bull barrels. If you choose to install one of these barrels, the barrel shim will need to be removed in order for it to fit properly within the stock.
Important Note: Aftermarket triggers and magazines that fit the Ruger® 10/22® will function in the RXR22. However, the RXR22 will lose it's last round bolt hold open functionality when using these aftermarket magazines and triggers. Savage has no control over the manufacture or function of any non-Savage triggers or components.
The Savage RXR22 is an exciting new addition to our rimfire rifle lineup! Whether you’re a fan of plinking steel plates, punching groups into paper, or walking the fall woods for small game, the RXR22 is built to be an affordable, lightweight, and reliable rifle for you! Customizing the RXR22 is easy with a wide range of aftermarket accessories available, so you can get the RXR22 perfectly tuned to your needs. If you’re looking for a starter rifle for a youth shooter, a reliable small game field rifle, or a fun plinker for the range, you’ll want to pick up the new Savage RXR22!
