The Savage 1911 is the newest addition to Savage’s line-up of handguns. While the aesthetic pays homage to the original, the Savage 1911 is built for hard use. Knowing the basic functions of your firearm, including field stripping and reassembly are critical to safe gun ownership. Once you have field stripped your handgun, these steps will guide you through how to reassemble a Savage 1911.

WARNING! Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Make sure your firearm is completely unloaded before attempting any field stripping or disassembly. Always wear safety glasses when field stripping or during disassembly/reassembly of your pistol.

How to Reassemble a Savage 1911

  1. With the slide turned up, install the barrel into the slide, chamber end first and barrel link facing up
  2. Place the barrel bushing into the slide with the lug aligned at the 6 o’clock position
  3. Rotate the barrel bushing clockwise until it stops
  4. Insert the smaller diameter spring inside of the larger diameter spring
  5. Insert the recoil spring guide into one end of the recoil spring
  6. Insert the recoil spring assembly into the rear of the dust cover of the slide, allowing the foot of the recoil spring guide to sit on the barrel just forward of the barrel link
  7. Grasp the slide allowing the barrel link to be vertical and install the slide onto the frame
  8. Align the takedown notch on the slide over the slide stop window on the frame
  9. Ensuring the barrel link is visible through the slide stop hole in the frame, insert the slide stop pin partially into the frame
  10. Once the slide stop pin is inserted partially, ensure it catches the barrel link by pulling the barrel out of the front of the slide
    1. If installed properly, the barrel should not come out. Reinstall slide stop if needed
  11. Align the slot on the slide stop with the plunger and press the slide stop straight into the pistol frame. Ensure that it is fully seated and push the slide forward
    1. Note: It may be helpful to engage the slide lock safety in the SAFE position during the next step
  12. Install the recoil spring plug onto the recoil spring and compress it into the slide
  13. Rotate the barrel bushing counterclockwise until it nests into the recoil spring plug
  14. If the slide lock safety is in the SAFE position, lower it into the FIRE position
  15. With the pistol pointed in a safe direction, insert the empty magazine into the firearm
  16. Draw the slide fully rearward until the slide locks open. Check to make sure the gun is empty of ammunition
  17. Disengage the slide stop and allow the slide to move slowly forward and close
  18. Hold the pistol and press the trigger. This will drop the hammer.

Safe firearm ownership is your responsibility. When something does not sound, feel, or look right, seek the advice of a professional gunsmith immediately.
