How to Field Strip a Savage 1911

The Savage 1911 is the newest addition to Savage’s line-up of handguns. While the aesthetic pays homage to the original, the Savage 1911 is built for hard use, and keeping your firearm clean is one of the easiest things to do to keep it functioning properly. But before you start to clean – you must learn how to field strip a Savage 1911.

WARNING! Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Make sure your firearm is completely unloaded before attempting any field stripping or disassembly. Always wear safety glasses when field stripping or during disassembly/reassembly of your pistol.

How to Field Strip a Savage 1911

  1. Remove the magazine
  2. Pull the slide rearward to visually check that the chamber is clear of ammunition
    1. Note: It may be helpful to engage the slide lock safety in the SAFE position during the next step
  3. Depress the recoil spring plug into the slide and rotate the barrel bushing clockwise
    1. Be sure to control the recoil spring plug as the barrel bushing rotates
  4. Remove the recoil spring plug from the end of the recoil spring
    1. The recoil spring plug will be pushed outward by the recoil spring
  5. If the slide lock safety is in the SAFE position, lower it into the FIRE position
  6. Pull the slide rearward, aligning the takedown notch of the slide over the slide stop
  7. Press the slide stop pin into the frame of the pistol and remove
  8. Grasp the top of the slide and move it forward off the frame rails
  9. Remove the recoil spring guide and recoil spring from the slide by pulling it rearward out of the dust cover
  10. Rotate the barrel bushing counterclockwise and remove by pushing the barrel out of the front of the slide
