How To Remove the Bolt in Savage Autoloader Rimfire

Disassembling the action and removing the bolt assembly will allow you to properly clean your Model 64, 62 and  954. Further disassembly is not recommended beyond what is outlined below. The steps outlined below will walk you through how to remove the bolt from your Savage Autoloading rimfire rifle.

Whenever cleaning or working on your firearm, be sure that it is fully unloaded and clear of ammunition. Safety should always be your #1 concern while around firearms. 

Models:

• Model 64 
• Model 62
• Model 954

Removal Steps:

1. Safely remove the magazine. Check to make sure your firearm is fully unloaded and clear of ammunition.
2. Remove the magazine plate if it is installed. Not all models utilize a magazine plate.
3. Remove the barreled action from the stock.
4. Remove the two stock assembly studs.
5. Remove the barrel retention plate before removing the barrel.
6. Remove the barrel from the receiver. Be careful not to lose the ejector.
7. Remove the magazine housing screw and remove the magazine housing assembly.
8. Remove the bolt handle
9. Remove the bolt by sliding it forward

Reinstallation Steps:

1. Slide the bolt assembly back into the receiver. Be sure it is oriented properly with the spring to the rear
2. Install the bolt handle into the bolt assembly through the ejection port.
3. Install the magazine housing assembly onto the receiver and install the front magazine housing screw. 
4. Be sure the ejector is properly installed and slide the barrel into the receiver.
5. Align the slot in the barrel with the slot in the receiver and install the barrel retention plate. 
6. Reinstall the two stock assembly studs.
7. Place the barreled action back into the stock.
8. In equipped models, replace the magazine plate. 
9. Reinstalled the two stock screws
10. Cycle the action a few times to ensure that nothing binds. Check the operation of the safety and place it into the SAFE position.
