We joined the world in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) earlier this year by shining a spotlight on women in the outdoors and those who make it a better place for all. We shared the stories and words of advice and encouragement of leaders, role models, mentors, mothers, sisters, and daughters to uplift and empower all the women who share the outdoors. We have met and gotten to know many more incredible women since March 2022, and we simply couldn’t wait until IWD 2023 to introduce you to more Women in the Outdoors! One of the women we are proud to call our friend at Savage is Payton Grimes. This is her story!

Payton Grimes

I am a 17 year old senior in high school, a long range shooting competitor, and hunter.

My advice for women in the outdoors: A piece of advice I would give to women in the outdoors would be don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and dip your feet into something if you have an interest in it. Whether it’s competition, hunting, or just going to a shooting range, don’t be afraid to ask questions and try it out!

How the outdoor industry can support women: I think a big thing that the industry can do to support women in the outdoors would be to not shy away from giving advice or helping when you see something they could improve. It is vital that women are accepted and provided with the necessary information to lead to their success.

How I Got Started:  As I was getting into the outdoor industry, I had support from friends and family. As I got into the competitive scene shortly after, help poured in from all over. Being new didn’t really hinder the support I received, and I’m so grateful for that. I was provided with ample information that helped me navigate through the outdoor scene. My biggest help was Phillip Velayo, who taught me how to shoot a rifle, got me ready to be a hunter, and eventually got me into competition and helped me every step of the way. I have had many amazing mentors since then and I hope to be as good a leader as them.

How I support other women: I have met so many amazing women in this industry, especially fellow ladies/juniors. A few months ago at a PRS match, I was asked to help a new shooter, Ms. Carole Wyatt who is in her 80’s and thriving. This was her first match and it was so amazing to see her drive and determination to do her best while taking in the feedback I was providing. People like her are the reason the outdoor industry is so amazing, it’s something you don’t see very often, but it’s a reflection of the way it’s supposed to be. Similarly, while competing in the Precision Rifle World Championship in France the past few weeks, I got the chance to share my knowledge with women from around the world. I watched Ms. Sabrina Baldessarini, an Italian competitor, run stages and while I knew she might get tips from others, I stepped in to help to create a more comfortable environment for her. She listened to what I had to say, and was grateful for my noticing ways I could help. I never shy away from a learning or teaching opportunity, and to help these ladies was especially rewarding.

Why I’m proud to be a woman in the outdoors: What makes me proud to be a woman in the outdoors is that we are the minority. There is a clear contrast in who represents, and I’m glad to be one of the few. As a junior and lady, I am grateful I get the opportunity to be a role model for all ages. I love that I can be an outlet for women and show them that it doesn’t matter your gender, age, or where you come from, you can only be as successful as you let yourself. In hunting and competition shooting, there is always something to be learned, and while I’m always learning, I see other women who look up to me. It feels amazing to share my light and help other women get closer to their full potential.

Challenges women face in the outdoor industry: Women definitely face challenges in this industry, one being looked at as less. There are men who are intimidated and who’s pride gets hurt when a woman can achieve the same as them and more. Some may try to downplay our greatness in order to save their feelings. Thankfully, most men in the industry are super supportive and applaud you when you are successful.

How I overcome challenges:  Keep doing you, and shut out the negativity thrown your way. There will always be people trying to tear you down, but don’t let them succeed. You should be proud of yourself no matter the outcome or feedback you get, as long as you’re doing your best.
