In order to find the right bases for a Savage centerfire rifle, you’ll need to determine three things about your rifle: flat or round back receiver, action length, and screw hole size.  This is a guide to help you determine each of these things in order to find the right bases for your rifle. 

Flat Back or Round Back Receiver

If you have a Model 110, you’ll need to take a look at the rear of the receiver and determine if it has a round back or flat back. If you have a different model of centerfire rifle (like an AXIS), skip ahead to the next section! 

Flat Back

If the receiver has a flat radius in the rear, it is a flat back. The Model 110 had a flat back from 1958  to the early-2000s. Look for a base that indicates it is for a Savage flat back receiver. 

Round Back

If the receiver has a round radius in the rear, it is a round back. All models manufactured starting in the mid-2000s have a round back. Look for a base that indicates it is for a Savage round back receiver. Some mount manufacturers may not mention if it’s for a round back or a flat back specifically.  In that case, more than likely the bases are designed for the current round back, but we recommend contacting the base manufacturer to verify.

Action Length

To determine the action length, measure from the rear of the tang safety to the front of the receiver.

Model 110 

If you have a long action Model 110, the overall length will be 9.25”.  Look for a base that indicates it is for a Savage Model 110 long action receiver. 

If you have a short action Model 110, the overall length of the receiver will be 8.40”. Look for a base that indicates it is for a Savage Model 10/110 short action receiver. 

AXIS 

If you have an AXIS, the overall length will be 6.961” for both short and long actions. Look for a base that indicates it is for an AXIS receiver.

Screw Hole Size

Savage centerfire rifles use #6-48 or #8-40 screws and there are a few ways to determine the screw hole size on your rifle in order to find the right base. 

Once you determine the screw hole size, look for a base that indicates that screw size.

Method 1: Measure the Screws

If you have a set of screws that fit, measure them with a pair of calipers. #6-48 screws will measure approximately 0.138”. #8-40 screws will measure approximately 0.164”. 

Method 2: Hex Wrench Fit

If the plugs and screws are removed or missing from the receiver, test fit a 1/8” hex wrench in the screw holes. If the 1/8” hex wrench fits, it’s a #8-40 screw hole. If the hex wrench does not fit, it’s a #6-48 screw hole.  

Method 3: Model Name

Savage manufactures several models with #8-40 screw holes. If you have one of the models below, it has #8-40 screw holes. Note: this is not an all-inclusive list.

Method 4: Look for a #8-40 Identifier

If you have a Savage centerfire rifle that was manufactured in 2021 or later, the receivers with #8-40 screw holes will have an identifier. 

Model 110 Identifier

Model 110s with #8-40 screw holes have an identifier on the bolt handle slot, as pictured below. 

AXIS Identifier

AXIS models with #8-40 screw holes will not have flat cuts along the top of the receiver, as pictured below. The AXIS receiver style with the #8-40 screws will look completely round when looking at it from the rear of the receiver.
