The new Model 110 RF rifles are here to set the standard for competitive rimfire shooting and training. While they’re a great choice as a dedicated competitive rimfire rifle, they’re also built to be excellent training rifles for competitive centerfire shooters. What makes these stand out as training rifles? The main reason is that the Model 110 RF bolt baffle is reversible. Read on to find out more about this feature, how to adjust it, and why it makes these great training rifles!

What is a Front Baffle?

If you’ve spent some time inspecting a bolt on an Axis or Model 110 rifle, you’ll notice a piece that sits behind the front locking lugs. That is the front baffle, which impacts the rear of your receiver to stop the rearward movement of your bolt after ejecting a spent cartridge.  This is what determines your rifle’s throw length.

On our other rimfire rifles, you won’t find a front bolt baffle due to different bolt designs. However, the 110 RF is different. The bolt mimics the design of a centerfire Model 110, using two front locking lugs to lock up the bolt in the action. Therefore, the 110 RF also has a front bolt baffle, but this one has a key difference. The Model 110 RF bolt baffle is reversible, allowing you to set it up with a bolt throw length like a short action centerfire rifle in addition to the standard 22 LR throw length.

Purpose Behind a Reversible Baffle

So, why is the Model 110 RF bolt baffle reversible? It all comes down to its purpose as a trainer rifle for competitive shooters.

First, let’s explain the concept of a trainer rifle. The trainer rifle is meant to be a practice rifle for you to use instead of your regular centerfire competition rifle. Ideally, a trainer rifle should be set up exactly like your centerfire rifle in order to preserve as much muscle memory as possible when training. This is where the reversible Model 110 RF bolt baffle comes into play, allowing you to set it up exactly like your centerfire rifle by replicating its bolt throw length.

By reversing the baffle and using a short action centerfire throw length, the Model 110 RF helps you preserve your muscle memory while training. You won’t develop bad habits like short stroking your bolt due to using a 22 LR throw length, and you can save money on ammo by training with 22 LR rather than your centerfire ammunition. The action is also compatible with Model 110 short action stocks and chassis, so you can set up your 110 RF just like your competition rifle for the perfect training analog.

How to Adjust the Front Baffle

Adjusting the Model 110 RF bolt baffle is quick and easy! Simply follow these steps

WARNING! Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Make sure your firearm is completely unloaded before attempting any field stripping or disassembly. Do not have any ammunition in your work area when completing any field stripping or disassembly.

  1. Unload the rifle and remove the magazine
  2. Turn OFF the safety
  3. With the rifle unloaded and pointed in a safe direction, pull the trigger.
  4. While keeping your finger on the trigger, pull the bolt rearward to the back of the receiver. Continue to hold the trigger and depress the bolt release on the side of the action.
  5. Pull the bolt rearward and remove it from the rifle.
  6. Remove the baffle by rotating it to the right and pulling it off the bolt.
  7. Turn the baffle to the reverse side to use the 308 throw length.
  8. Reinstall the baffle onto the bolt.
  9. Reinstall your bolt into the rifle by lining it up in the receiver, depressing the trigger and bolt release, and pushing the bolt in.
  10. Cycle the action to verify proper function and check for the extended bolt throw.
