We joined the world in celebrating International Women’s Day (IWD) earlier this year by shining a spotlight on women in the outdoors and those who make it a better place for all. We shared the stories and words of advice and encouragement of leaders, role models, mentors, mothers, sisters, and daughters to uplift and empower all the women who share the outdoors. We have met and gotten to know many more incredible women since March 2022, and we simply couldn’t wait until IWD 2023 to introduce you to more Women in the Outdoors! One of the women we are proud to call our friend at Savage is Annie Weisz. This is her story!

Annie Weisz

I run a food blog focused on wild game recipes called Peak to Plate. Sharing food with others is one of my biggest passions and I love inspiring home cooks like myself to be more creative with their wild game!

My advice for women in the outdoors: Don’t be afraid to try something new! If you never try, you’ll never have an opportunity to learn and grow.

How the outdoor industry can support women: I would love to see more products offered in women’s versions that are of the same quality as men’s versions. We work hard and need equipment and clothing that will work hard for us too.

How women can get involved in the outdoors: Finding local organizations is a great way to find like-minded women that support each other. I love being involved with Wyoming Wildlife Federation because they have a great group of women and men working to conserve the beautiful wild places in my home state. I’ve met some really amazing people by being involved with WWF.

How I Got Started:  I have my husband to thank for being my adventure partner and encouraging me as I navigate the hunting world. I’m constantly learning and he is always so helpful and patient. Since starting my food blog, I’ve made many connections with people I probably wouldn’t have had the opportunity to meet otherwise. I receive a lot of support from my food blog community and I love meeting other outdoorswomen that support each other.

Why I’m proud to be a woman in the outdoors: The moments that make me most proud to be a woman in the outdoors are the times we sit around dinner table and enjoy meals provided by meat that I harvested myself. It brings me so much joy to see my 2 boys enjoy the meals I make and to teach them where their food comes from.

Challenges women face in the outdoor industry: I think a lot of the challenges women face in the outdoor industry are self-induced because women often feel like they’re not good enough, strong enough, etc. Those messages come from a lot of different places and we often internalize them let them impede our personal growth.

How I overcome challenges: Something I like to do to combat this is I try to not compare myself to others and focus on improving on the person I was yesterday instead. Easier said than done!
