How To Remove the Bolt in Savage A Series Rifles
Removing the bolt assembly from your A Series rifle is the first step needed to properly clean your rifle. In some instances, your scope may need to be removed in order to access the dust cover. The steps outlined below will walk you through how to remove the bolt assembly from your A Series rifle.
Whenever cleaning or working on your firearm, be sure that it is fully unloaded and clear of ammunition. Safety should always be your #1 concern while around firearms.
All A Series Models:
- A22 and variants
- A22 Magnum and variants
- A17 and variants
- A17 HM2
Removal Steps:
- Safely remove the magazine. Check to make sure your firearm is fully unloaded and clear of ammunition.
- Ensure that the safety is in the SAFE position
- Use a punch or Allen wrench to press inward on the gray button at the rear of the dust cover
- Push the dust cover forward and upward to remove
- While wearing safety glasses, slowly remove the recoil spring by pushing it forward and pulling it upward
- Remove the bolt handle
- Slide the bolt rearward. It will require a small lift over the hammer.
Reinstallation Steps:
- Slide the bolt back in, being sure to orient it correct
- Reinsert the bolt handle, paying attention if it is keyed. Make sure that the bolt handle is fully seated in the bolt.
- Reinstall the recoil spring. Ensure the lever is down and secure to the receiver. Give a small tug on the bolt handle to make sure that the recoil spring is inserted correctly.
- Reinstall the dust cover by inserting its tab into the receiver. Then lock it into place.
- Cycle the action and move the safety to the SAFE position. Reinstall the magazine.
The video below will demonstrate these steps as well. Please note, the video shows a 22 LR version. The bolt handle is slightly different for other cartridges and is keyed so it can only be installed in one direction.
