How to Adjust AccuFit for a Perfect Rifle Fit

Fitment is a critical component to accuracy that few in the firearm industry talk about enough -- not Savage. We introduced AccuFit in 2018 to address this need head on. If you've ever shot a borrowed rifle and had trouble finding your target in the optic or felt uncomfortable holding it, then you know exactly why rifle fitment is so important. AccuFit is an innovative new stock system that lets the shooter adjust the length of pull and comb height without paying a gunsmith or purchasing aftermarket parts. This guide will show you how to adjust AccuFit for a perfectly fitting rifle. 

Unboxing Your AccuFit

You have your new Savage with AccuFit -- let's unbox it! The first and most obvious thing in your box is your new Savage rifle! You'll notice that it has the longest length of pull spacer and lowest comb riser piece already installed. The length of pull should be approximately 13.75", which is standard for most full-size rifles. The lowest comb piece looks flush with the rest of the stock, which is also standard among most full-size rifles. If you have other rifles, this AccuFit set-up should feel very familiar (although it may not fit you in its current state). Next out of the box is the AccuFit kit! It includes three additional length of pull spacers, Phillips head screws, and four additional comb height adapters. The comb height adapters decrease in height in 0.125" increments. The length of pull spacers decrease in length in 0.25" increments, which is why the different screw lengths are included.  The AccuFit kit also includes adjustment instructions. Your rifle's bolt and magazine (if it has a detachable box magazine) are next out of the box. And finally, a gun kit -- including your owner's manual, chamber flag, Project ChildSafe lock, and a few goodies.

How to Adjust AccuFit

Now that you have all the AccuFit pieces out of the box, let's learn how to adjust AccuFit. Then we'll learn how to make sure you have the correct fit. 

Tools Needed:

• Phillips head screwdriver. That's it. 

Steps:

**For safety, remove the bolt and magazine. Verify that the chamber is clear.** 

1. Remove the screws (top and bottom) from the buttstock with a Phillips head screwdriver.
2. Remove recoil pad and factory insert.
3. Slide the comb riser toward the back of the gun, then pull up to remove.
4. Select the proper comb height (pieces A-E) and length of pull insert (pieces 1-4). 
5. Align proper comb riser with grooves in stock and press straight down. 
6. Once all the way down, slide the comb riser piece forward to remove any gaps between comb riser and stock.
7. Attach proper length of pull insert to the end of the buttstock.
8. Reattach recoil pad with proper length screws. (See table below for screw lengths)
9. Do not overtighten screws.

How To Fit Yourself

Shooters come in all shapes and sizes, but rifles have traditionally been one-size-fits-all. Not with AccuFit! Let's learn how to adjust AccuFit for a perfectly customized rifle fit. There's a chance that the factory installed fit is going to work for you, but we still recommend going through these steps to verify it's the best possible fit. Just because you've always shot rifles with "standard" dimensions doesn't mean it's your best fit. 

**For safety, remove the bolt and magazine. Verify that the chamber is clear.** 

First step: find your length of pull. Length of pull is the distance from the center of the butt pad to the face of the trigger. The most common way to find your length of pull is to hold the rifle in the crook of your dominant arm and see where your trigger finger lands in relation to the face of the trigger. If your hand doesn't reach the trigger comfortably, the stock is too long. If your hand goes beyond the trigger, the stock is too short. 

From here, experiment with the different length of pull inserts until you find the one that is most comfortable for you. Expert Tip: Instead of screwing the recoil pad and insert into the stock every time, use a piece of blue painter's tape to secure the pieces to the stock as you experiment with different length of pull inserts. You'll know the length of pull is right when you shoulder the rifle and you don't have to bend your neck unnaturally. The center of your trigger finger should rest comfortably on the face of the trigger. Patrick Kelley has another way to way to verify your length of pull: roll the thumb of your dominant hand over the stock, shoulder the gun with your head up -- with the gun shouldered, you should have three finger widths between your nose and your thumb knuckle.

Models with AccuFit can be adjusted between 12.75" and 13.75". The longest insert is installed at the factory giving the rifle a 13.75" length of pull. Each insert decreases in length by 0.25". If you need the shortest length of pull possible at 12.75", the recoil pad can be screwed directly on the stock with no length of pull insert installed. This is approximately the same length of pull as many youth or compact stocks, which makes AccuFit a great option for smaller-framed individuals or youth shooters that will grow with their gun. 

Next step: adjust the comb height. For this step, it's important to have your optic mounted already. The height of the comb determines the natural resting point of your eye, which must be directly in line with the optic for fast target acquisition. Experiment with the different comb heights until you find the one that instantly aligns your eye to the scope (that painter's tape trick is useful here too!). You may need to also adjust how your optic is mounted by choosing different ring heights. You'll know the comb height is right when you make comfortable cheek bone to stock contact and you can see through the optic clearly. 

Last step: With both of these adjustments made, confirm your custom fit. Close your eyes and shoulder the rifle where it feels comfortable for your cheek, neck and shooting stance. Open your eyes. If see any dark crescents on the outside edges of your optic or you have to move your face to look through the optic comfortably, you need to make further adjustments. 

If everything is perfectly aligned, you now have a perfectly fitted rifle that will serve you better than any factory firearm. It will shoot like a natural extension of your body for better, more repeatable accuracy in any situation. The better a rifle fits you, the better you'll shoot it. Don't believe us?
